Dermatofibroma (Benign Skin Bump) Treatment

Expert Diagnosis for Harmless Skin Growths That May Still Need a Second Look

If you’ve discovered a small, firm bump on your skin—especially on your legs or arms—it may be a dermatofibroma, also known as a benign skin nodule or harmless skin growth. While usually non-cancerous and painless, these bumps can sometimes be mistaken for other skin conditions. At Wallis Dermatology Associates, we specialize in diagnosing and treating all types of skin growths, giving you clarity and peace of mind.

What Is a Dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a benign (non-cancerous) skin bump that typically develops in response to minor trauma, such as an insect bite, ingrown hair, or skin injury. These growths are most often found on the legs, arms, or upper back, and are more common in adults—especially women.

What does it look like?

  • A small, firm bump under the skin

  • Often brown, reddish, or pink

  • Less than 1 cm in size

  • May itch or feel tender to the touch

  • May dimple inward when pinched (known as the “dimple sign”)

Though often called a harmless skin growth, any new or changing bump should be evaluated by a dermatologist to rule out more serious conditions.

Should I Be Concerned?

Dermatofibromas are harmless, but they can sometimes be confused with more serious skin conditions like moles, cysts, or even skin cancer. If you notice changes in color, size, or texture—or if the bump becomes painful—it’s important to get it checked by a specialist.

Diagnosis & Treatment Options

At Wallis Dermatology Associates, we begin with a visual exam and may perform a skin biopsy to confirm that the bump is a dermatofibroma and not something more concerning.

Most dermatofibromas do not require treatment unless they’re:

  • Causing discomfort

  • Located in a high-friction area

  • Unwanted for cosmetic reasons

If removal is desired, we offer:

  • Surgical excision to completely remove the bump

  • Minimally invasive procedures performed in-office

  • Post-procedure care to help reduce scarring
