Comprehensive Skin Care for Your Moles in East Texas

Moles are common skin growths that most people develop throughout their lives. While most moles are harmless, some can be a sign of skin cancer—or simply a source of cosmetic concern. At Wallis Dermatology Associates, our board-certified dermatologists offer expert mole evaluation, personalized care, and safe, effective removal when needed.

What Is a Mole?

A mole, also called a nevus, is a cluster of pigment-producing cells that appear on the skin as a small, colored spot. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and may appear anywhere on the body.

Types of Moles

Understanding the type of mole you have is key to monitoring your skin health:

  1. Common Moles
Small, round, and usually brown or flesh-colored. These are typically harmless and appear in childhood or early adulthood.

  2. Atypical (Dysplastic) Moles
Larger than average with irregular borders and uneven coloring. These moles may resemble melanoma and should be monitored closely.

  3. Congenital Moles
Present at birth. Larger congenital moles may carry a slightly higher risk of developing into melanoma.

  4. Acquired Moles
Develop later in life due to genetics or sun exposure. These are common and usually benign.

  5. Changing or Suspicious Moles
Moles that evolve in size, shape, color, or texture—or bleed, itch, or crust—should be evaluated promptly. These may be warning signs of **melanoma**, a serious form of skin cancer.

When to See a Dermatologist About a Mole

While most moles are harmless, it’s important to monitor for any changes in size, color, shape, or texture. You should schedule a skin exam if you notice:

  • A mole that is asymmetrical or has irregular borders

  • Color variation within the mole

  • A mole that’s growing, itching, bleeding, or painful

  • Any new or changing spot on your skin

Early detection of atypical or cancerous moles—especially melanoma—can save lives. At Wallis Dermatology, we use advanced dermoscopy and skin checks to identify concerning lesions early.

Mole Removal Options

We offer several mole removal methods depending on the size, depth, and type of mole:

  • Shave Excision – For raised moles; no stitches required

  • Surgical Excision – For deeper moles or those needing further biopsy; includes stitches and a small scar

  • Laser Treatment – Cosmetic removal of non-cancerous moles in select cases

Your dermatologist will recommend the best approach based on your skin type and medical history.

Cosmetic Mole Removal

If a mole affects your confidence or is located in an area of irritation (like from shaving or clothing), cosmetic removal may be an option. While insurance often covers medically necessary removals, cosmetic procedures may be out-of-pocket—we’re happy to discuss all options clearly before proceeding.

If a mole is suspicious, uncomfortable, or unwanted for cosmetic reasons, our dermatologists may recommend removal. Mole removal is a quick, in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia.

Healing & Aftercare

Most patients heal quickly with minimal discomfort. You may experience:

  • Mild redness or scabbing

  • Instructions for keeping the site clean and covered

  • Follow-up for biopsy results, if applicable

Scarring is generally minimal and discussed with you before treatment. Cosmetic mole removals are typically not covered by insurance, but we’ll walk you through your options.
